The Wednesday Wars- Mrs. Baker

Holling Hoodhood is really in for it. He's just started seventh grade with Mrs. Baker, a teacher he knows is out to get him. Why else would she make him read Shakespeare outside class? Holling is completely convinced that Mrs. Baker despises him. Why does he believe this? What details help support his case? Do you think it is obvious which students your teachers like and which they dislike?

  1. I think she makes him read Shakespeare outside of class because she might want to embarrass him. I think he believes she hates him because she akes him work and not have fun. But on her side of the situation she might think it is helping him. But also some things may not help him. Like when the rats, that got loose in the room when he accidentally let go of the cage he was cleaning while trying to move them from cage to cage, got out and when he brought the cream puffs to give to the class, the rats ate them while the kids were at recess. Mrs. Baker made Holling clean it up even though it wasnt him fault. Or when she made him clean her whole room while she sat there and watched. She made him go outside and pound them on the wall and he ruined the first cream puffs.
I think it can be obvious that some teachers dont like some students as much as others but it may just be something going on in their life and they have no other way to take out their anger or sadness. It also may be because that student isnt being smart at the moment or they havent listened and they just answered the question they asked. But all in all i think Mrs. Baker could dislike him but I will have to finish the book before i can really know.

  2. in the book Wednesday Wars Holling Hoodhood, the main character, is put up against a very challenging foe, Mrs. Baker. Holling believes that his teacher hates him and is only trying to make his life miserable, but i believe she just expects the most out of him and is trying to push him for greatness. Every Wednesday Holling and Mrs. Baker square off in an ultimate battle between a helpless child and his unforgiving teacher and this wednesday Mrs. Baker has taken up a new weapon, Shakespear. Holling is 100% confident that this is all a plan to bore him to death, but i believe that she just wants a friend to read a book with him. Holling believes that his teacher hates him because he is Presbyterian and has to stay with her in her classroom every week. One thing that supports his theory is when she gives him a huuuggggeeeeeeee sentence to diagram but gives other students small sentences. Sometimes, even at FPD, the teachers show their favor towards students. Sometimes this is a good thing because the teacher might like you but then if they don't your life could become a living nightmare....

  3. So far I really like the book. It is really good and it is very interesting. I think that Mrs. Baker does sort of like Holling but she doesn’t want to show it. I think that she might make him read outside of class just maybe to make him smarter and have more knowledge because I think she really does like him. I think that if I were in his position, I probably would think she didn't like me but after awhile I think I would start to think she exactly hate me, but you get the point. I think it would be hard not to believe that when she makes him do things teachers normally don’t make students do, well I guess some of it is normal like getting the cream puffs from like 3 floors away and then having to smell and stare at them and not eat any. Also the having to pound the erasers on the wall is something that might make him think she doesn’t like him.

I think that it really isn’t too obvious in our school and some other schools, but there are some cases where you can definitely tell if a teacher likes you or someone else or not. I don’t think teachers try to show that they like someone or not but it just kind of shows and you can tell. I think that there are a few teachers that really like me, some that don’t like me, and some that don’t really even care.

  4. Wednesday wars is a book that will have is funny moments and the rest keeps you addicted. Mrs. Baker is still an mystyerious character, so far. Holling is determined that Mrs. Baker is out to get him because he's a Presbyterian. Now he has to spend every Wednesday with her in a battle of epic proportions.
Some of my teachers can be a tad like Mrs. Baker. i mean they wont send assassins after me or make me clean an animal cage that hasn't been cleaned out in years, but they have some characteristics like an occasional fake smile. then they do something that they say is an easy assignment, but it turns out to be something a college student couldn't do. sometimes they add things in quizes that are meant to trick you. but holling kinda misunderstands his teacher in my opinion and mrs baker misunderstands holling.

  6. Holling believes that Mrs. Baker completely dislikes him. She makes him read Shakespere when everyone else is gone the church on Wednesday. I think that Mrs. Baker is making him read Shakespere instead of letting him go to the playground might be that she is mad because he is the only one in his class that doesnt go to church on Wednesdays. Maybe she had something secretive planned to do instead but he ruined it since she has to stay with Holling. I also think that he might not be trying his best in school and Mrs. Baker expects more out of him, so she makes Holling read Shakespere.
I think that it is very obvious which teachers like certain students and some that dislike others. Sometimes it feels like the smarter kids who make really good grades all the time are like more since they are exceeding in the class, or the teacher will smile at you a lot if she likes you. It is very easy to see if a teacher does not like you. For example, everytime they talk about being quiet, etc. they might look at you even though there are 20 more kids in the class. Or sometimes they dont pick on you to ask a question when your hand has been raised for 30 minutes, but none of these come close to Holling's case. None of them have made us clean a cage that hasnt been cleaned for years, or made us carry food from the cafeteria only one tray at a time. I think that it is very obvious that Mrs. Baker does not like Holling.

  7. I think Mrs. Baker makes Holling read Shakespeare outside of class because she wants other people to know he is reading it, like his classmates. If they know he's reading it, they might want to read it too. I don't think that Mrs. baker despises Holling, that's just the way teachers are. They act like they hate you, but in the end you realize they love you and that's why they did it. Holling probably thinks this because all of the bad stuff happens to him, but Mrs. Baker is probably just testing him to see how smart he is. Mrs. Baker probably did set up the cream puff accident just to see how Holling would handle that situation. I think that all teachers love their students equally, they just treat other kids differently depending on how well they can handle certian situations. Mrs. Baker probably does like Holling, but she just doesn't want to show it because she might think that his classmates would think that she likes him more than the other students. All teachers love their students equally because their job is to help his or her students be the best they can be.
