The Scourge is a fascinating and suspenseful novel that examines the tendency of people to become distrustful, fearful, and superstitious. Discuss the ways that the characters in The Scourge have become paranoid and irrational.
since the fall the people have become in a way raciest. the darker colored skin people must live on the ground wile the lighter colored skin people get the luxchery of living in the safty of the trees. the whole reason this came about was that there were, in there eyes, monters who came to their land once a year for a couple of days and romed the rland eating anything wit flesh that was in sight. when this time came, the groundlings{those who lived on the ground} fled to the caves and the lofties{those who lived in the trees} stayed up in the trees. most of the time these two grounps never mixed until the flesh eaters{those who were diesed and ate all flesh} came. this is when one blind person from the groundling tribe would gather water. the blind were "protected" from the flesh eaters. one loftie called the keeper would make sure that the water bearer was safe. this is how it had been since they could remember.
Fennel is the main character in the story. Fennel is sightless, so you can imagine how fearful that must make her. Honestly, Fennel is very brave considering her circumstances. She is a groundling which is a person that lives on the ground. There are two groups of people in this book, the groundlings and the lofties. The lofties are not supposed to technically be associated with groundlings. Fenn is a water girl, so she has to go through the woods and back several times to get water for her people, the groundlings, and water for the lofties as well. The lofties in return give the groundlings protection because they are above ground and can see when harmful things are approaching. Such things as fleshies come and attack the groundlings and prevent them from getting food, water, etc. The Scourge comes once a year and basically bring the fleshies along with it. Fennel has been set on a quest to find the Hidden Waters. Peree, her caretaker, is a lofty and he comes with her to help her find the waters. Before this, Peree is very kind to Fenn letting her go for a swim, protecting her, and doi ng anything else he can to make her feel safe. I feel like he is a nice guy but some surprises may come after he is hurt. He could change or something could happen to casue him to not be trusted by her anymore...
when brings back water from the watering hole ther is about a fourth gone so the groundlings blame the lofties for stealing it. I think i would be pretty delusional from all that time in a small frozen cave. I mean i dont believe it was the lofties fault and that possibly-becuase of her blindness-fennel could have poured a little water out while trying to fill the sacks up to the brim. If the lofties and groundlings dont end up settling this and talking about then it could possibly end up in a war. one of the really interesting parts to me, is when peeree ends up walking through the cave with fennel. He totally has a crush on her even though he has a "fiance". And then after bear kisses her on the cheeck peeree just happens to come in and see it all. He gets really jelly which makes me really think of gale as peeree and peeta as bear. In the hunger games gale goes on and on talking about how horrible peeta is and all this stuff-just like when peeree talks all this junk abou bear kissing fennel. This book is super amazingly fantastical-wonderis!!!! Hope there is a second book!
The people in the scourge have become fearful because of the flesh eaters. They have made the people scared and when people are scared they get superstitiuos. the people are scared that their water person (Fennel) will be to tired to get the water so they are sending people to look for the hidden waters. The hidden waters are a story that there is a water source somewhere in the caves. The caves are huge and you can get lost very easily in them. It is very dangerouse to go looking for the hiddern waters. The people are also scared that the flesh eaters will not leave and they will have to go somewhere else or live in the caves forever. I think the people are to worried because hte flesh eaters have only been there for about a week as far as i have read.
Since the fall people have had a greater fear because there is always a chance that the flesh eaters will come. Every sound makes you jump because your scared that it's the flesh eaters coming to kill you. Another way that ways have changed since the fall is that raceism plays a big part in how their day to day life is. The groundings, or the people with darker skin, have to live on the ground closer to the scourge. While the lofties, who have lighter skin, live in the trees away from the scourge. This creates a tension betweeen the two groups.Even if your paretns were lofties but you were their child but were dark skined you would be given to the groundlings at the exchange.
Characters in the Scourge such as Fennel, Bear, Peree, Aloe, Shrike, and many others have all become fearful because of the time when the Scourge or the fleshies arrive. Fennel is frightened maybe the most because she is, as the Lofties say, "The Water Bearer" and both Groundlings and Lofties are depending on her for their survival. Peree is frightened because it his job to protect Fennel, as he is her "Keeper". Bear fears for the safety of Fennel as well. He and Peree have the same intentions I believe. They want to keep Fennel safe, but they have other reasons because I can tell they both love her. Aloe worries for Fenn as well, seeing as she is her foster daughter. Then as Fenn and Peree search for the Hidden Waters, the become more fearful. After Peree is attacked by what he thinks was a tiger, he and Fennel fear that he will not make it. I am excited about finishing the book and I can't wait until the sequel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The people have been scared of the scourge for years. And each year the scourge comes to there village and they hide from it afrade. With the the lofteys living in the trees and the groundlings hiding in caves. They survive having the blind fetch water and bring it back to drink. The lofteys and the groundlings are enimes with each other but yet they depend on each other for supplies.
So far, the scourge is really good. at the end, of every chapter it leaves you hanging. in the book, there are groundlings and there are lofties. the lofties are superior to the groundlings. the loftiees live in the trees and the groundlings, of course, live in the trees. every so often, there are these creatures called the scourge that are half-dead... half-living. Fennel, the main character, is sightless. she has to get water every day during the time when the scourge is there. every sightless person has a keeper, which is a loftie, who protects them from the scourge. Fennel was very scared the first day and almost didnt leave the cave to get the water. she has never seen the scourge... since you know, she is blind. she breaks down almost every time she leaves the cave to get water. she either lies down and cries or totally zones out and wont talk. when she gets back to the cave she sleeps the whole time and tries to not think about anything that has or will happen. Aso, there are the Three. they all seem to become paranoid and want Fennel not to get water for the lofties and bring back their own water. they get paranoided a drop of water missing from the water sacks and immedietly accuse the lofties and dont even think about other possibilities. everyone want the scourge gone and wont go back to normal until they do.
Hmmm... Well, I'd like to ask you, my fellow bloggers, if you'd become irrational and paranoid if there was an evil, flesh-eating, horrid MONSTER roaming in your midst. Now, I know that they aren't really scary creatures, but only sick people created to look like so by they imagination of our narrator. But, needless to say, I(as well as all of us) would be scared out of our minds. Because of these flesh-eaters, these people are having to be kept to the caves(or in other cases, the trees), which is preventing the people from food, water, and light. People like Fenn have lived their whole lives at the mercy of the Scourge, and so has caused them to be paranoid as to when these flesh-eaters will come back. I too, would be paranoid if I had spent 17 years of my life listening for the sickening creatures to appear and like, eat everyone. And not only that, but how hard is it to be rational when you've got creatures like this on your tail all the time, and have to constantly starve of food and thirst. I wouldn't be rational either. All this to say, it's a hard life for a groundling and/or lofty. I'd be paranoid and irrational too. I ask, my fellow bloggers, would you not as well?
in the scourge, the poeple are terrified of this flesh eater creature called the scourge. to get water for survalive, they send a blind girl named fennel (fenn) to get water for them because they belive that the blind has a special power to protect them the the fleshies. Fenn is scared of the scourge but she knows she is safe because the blind has keepers. Her keeper is Peree, and Peree keeps her safe with his bow and arrows. But Aloe (fenns foster mother) is scared for fennel and worries for her. The elders in the group are worryed because they think the lofties are stealing water from them by tricking fenn. There is a fued going on between the groundlings (including aloe, fenn and the elders-they live on the ground) and the lofties (inclusding peree- they live in the trees) between the water and resoucres. So with everything going on with the fued, the groundling donnt trust the lofties, and the lofties dont trust the groundlings. So people are on edge with no knowing who to trust and being scared of the fleshies.
The Scourge is a disgusting breed of flesh-eaters that are Fennel and her people's worst nightmare. Everytime they arrive, the Groundlings must retreat to the caves, and they have to send Fennel, the Water-Bearer, to fetch their water for them. Fennel is the only one who can fetch the water because she is Sightless, which her people belive makes her unaffected by the Scourge. The people's fear of the Scourge causes them to make unwise and irrational decisions, which could be fatal for their people. But when Fennel finds out a secret that could set her people free from the Scourge and their curse, she doesn't know if she will be able to save them in time, or if their fear will ultimately lead them to their demise.
The scourge is a rather uncivilized form of physically unstable personnel, close to a moderninzed thought of zombies. The people that live in the caves are terrified of the scourge, fearing that they may be bitten by the brutal force and suffer along with them. They are so afraid of the creatures, in fact, that only one person may leave the cave to retrieve important nutrients such as water in the form of sacks. This arduous work is performed by a blind girl named Fennel who is unaffected by the zombies but still very much afraid. Although the zombies ignore her, she is frequently paranoid of the possibility that the zombie-like creatures to snap and attack her spontaneously. When the scourge settles into Fennel's town for much longer than they ever had before, the attitudes of the people become sparkled with paranoia and irrationalism. The three leaders decide that they need to send the poor blind girl into a stretch of land that she has not memorized to find the prophesized waters that are much of a myth. Their paranoia that they may run out of water and die affects their desperate, irrational decisions to send an unexperienced blind girl to save them from their plight, with no one to take over her spot but one of the three leaders.
